John R Korzi, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Counseling and long-time Franciscan University of Steubenville faculty member, died January 1, 2017, in Chicago, IL.

He was born November 27, 1928, in Windber, PA, the son of the late Anna and Andrew Korzi.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Providence College and a master’s degree in counseling from Duquesne University. He pursued doctoral graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, majoring in emotional disorders of children and counseling.

Professor Korzi served on the faculty of Franciscan University for 50 years from 1955 to 2005. During his tenure, he reorganized the Department of Education and founded the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, Mental Health and Human Services, and Social Work, serving as chairman for each. He developed the Master in Counseling graduate program and served on countless committees devoted to faculty welfare and governance.

John was a truly dedicated teacher and counselor, sharing his deep knowledge in his field, his love of history and Renaissance art, and an abiding Catholic faith with his students.

The University recognized his many contributions to its development with the Founders Award for the Graduate Counseling Program, the Fr. Columba Delvin Campus Leadership and Teaching Award, and the Senior Professor Excellence in Teaching Award, among other honors.

He was a psychological testing consultant for state, county and community agencies, area public school systems and local businesses. He was a long-time member and former chairman of the Jefferson Behavioral Health System Board.

John served on the Diocese of Steubenville School Board and the Catholic Social Services Board. He was a member and officer of the Steubenville Serra Club which fosters vocations to the priesthood and religious life. He received the Caritas Medal from the late Bishop John King Mussio for his service to the Church and Diocese.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Savastone Korzi, his first wife, Mary Lorenc Korzi, brother Andrew Korzi Jr., sister Mary Korzi Majoris and son, Kevin. He is survived by daughter, Karen Korzi Noetzel, her husband Mark Noetzel, three grandchildren and daughter-in-law Debbie Korzi.

Visitation will be held on January 13th between 3:00pm and 7:00pm at the Mosti Funeral Home: Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd, Steubenville, OH.  The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00am on Saturday, January 14th, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
