Mary G. Barber, died on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the age 93 at Valley Hospice. She was born December 5, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Costanzo and Concetta Almonte Grossi. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Michael (Mickey) Barber, her grandson, Brian Shannon, her four brothers, Joseph, Sebastian (Bus), Dominic and Albert and her sister, Helen Lamantia.
She was a loving mother to four children: Dolores (Ron) Michnowicz of Steubenville, Patricia (Michael) Diduch of Pittsburgh, Mary Michele (Bill) Lamantia of Steubenville and Michael Jr. (Sherri) Barber of Steubenville. She was a wonderful grandma and nunnie to the pride and joy of her life - her grandchildren, Michelle Gulan, Ronnie Michnowicz, Marla Beatty, Nicole Lloyd, Jamie Ross, Michael III and Tony Barber. Her great grandchildren – Mikayla and Ryan, Francesca, Luca and Dominic, Mickey, Logan and Johnny. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mary was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Name Cathedral until its merger as Triumph of the Cross in Steubenville. She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Women’s Club and served as a past president, a member of the Diocesan Women’s Club, past chairperson of the Bishop’s Charity Ball, and prepared meals for the Chrism Mass dinner for many years. She was awarded two Papal Awards for her meritorious service to the church: The Caritas Medal by Bishop John King Mussio and The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Bishop Gilbert Sheldon. Mary was honored for her work with Franciscan University of Steubenville with the Founder’s Award.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 3-7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Friday at Holy Rosary Church at 10 am, Bishop Roger Foys will celebrate. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be Thursday at 7 pm.
