MaryAnn was my cousin and a gentle, caring soul. I can't express how much her work in behalf of children means to me. Back in the 1930s when my own mother was a little girl, she received a concussion during a fight with an older brother. My mother's family was poor, and she was one of 11 kids. With no extra savings to cover the emergency, they never took my mother to a doctor, and the concussion was untreated. At the end of her life, my mother died of a form of dementia that was brought on by that early childhood head injury. Luckily, times have changed. Today children, even the poorest children, have access to advocates and social workers. I am positive that Mary Ann's work saved many many kids from the same fate. Blessings.

Dear Smogor Family,
I am so sad and shocked to learn of MaryAnn's passing. I heard the sad news last night and have been flooded with childhood memories ever since - all of them warm and funny and wonderful. MaryAnn was one of my best friends growing up and a huge part of my childhood. I think I spent more time at your family's home than at my own. She always had the biggest heart and I feel so extremely fortunate to have spent my childhood growing up with her. You all have my deepest condolences for your terrible loss. You all have a very special place in my heart.

Dear Smogor Family...
I cannot begin to tell you how very sad I am to hear of MaryAnn's passing. We were true friends from grade school through high school. There are far too many wonderful memories to recount-- and every one of your names takes me to a place in my childhood that I shall never forget. Every day, we would play in the "alley" and know that we could always walk right in to your home and become a part of whatever was going on -- there was never a dull moment. We always felt welcomed.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. With warmest regards,
Jill Kaplan Rozenman

To MaryAnn's family, my condolences. I knew her from the Ohio Network of CACs and always looked forward to seeing her at our meetings, and knew if I needed anything at all I could call her and she would provide. I was so inexperienced when I started, and all of the CAC directors were so supportive, especially MaryAnn. I didn't know she was sick. I have thought of her fondly since I resigned from the CAC, and I am so sad for your family losing her. She was wonderful and funny, and a little salty, but so caring. Jefferson County's children are losing a huge champion. Please know I am thinking of you and holding your family in the light.
