Deacon Lawrence Meagher Obituary

Deacon Lawrence Raymond Meagher began his final journey home on Monday, March 26, 2018, in Steubenville, Ohio. Lawrence "Larry", son of Lawrence and Teresa Meagher, was born in Queens, New York on November 20, 1928. Larry began working for Fireman’s Fund Insurance in Manhattan as a high school student and worked there until his retirement in 1984.  While there he met the love of his life Marie Whelan whom he married in August 28, 1954.  They were married until her death in December 1993.

Larry served in the United States Naval Reserve for seven years.  Larry and Marie raised their seven children in Queens. He was ordained a deacon for the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn in 1977.  Larry and Marie were active in the Catholic charismatic renewal, the pro-life movement, visiting the sick and served in various other ways over many years.  After Larry’s retirement from Fireman’s Fund, he and Marie moved to Hudson, New York, and served at St. Mary’s Church. In 1989 they moved to Steubenville for Christian community and to be closer to family.  Larry continued to serve in hospital ministry, as a prison chaplain and at his parish.  He treasured his time with his men’s group and was always available to encourage his grandchildren and many others.  His hobbies were golf, listening to Irish music, being a Pirates fan and crossword puzzles.  He took much pleasure in gathering his family together with the song, “This is the Day that the Lord Has Made”.

Deacon Larry is survived by his seven children: Raymond (Lucy) Meagher of Dumont, New Jersey, Francis Meagher of Elmont, New York, MaryTherese (Craig) Anderson of San Jose, California, Joan (Shawn) Scott of Steubenville, Father Joseph Meagher of Newark, New Jersey, Terese (Darwin) Rigel of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Thomas Meagher of Carrollton.  He has twenty-six grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, Vincent Meagher, Eileen Alfonzo and Jeannie Leone.
