Joan Marie Giannini, 84, of Steubenville, Ohio surrounded by her loving family, peacefully passed on Sunday, January 14, 2018. Joan was born on October 30, 1933 in Drums, Pennsylvania and was raised in Weirton, West Virginia. She is the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Margaret E. (Waskovich) Krensavage, and the sister of the late Joseph R. Krensavage (Paula) of Weirton, WV. On June 16, 2014, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. T. G. Giannini, an oral-maxillofacial surgeon whose practice served the Ohio Valley for over 40 years.

Joan attended elementary school at St. Paul’s in Weirton, WV and was in the first graduating class from the “new” Steubenville Catholic Central High School in 1951. Following high school, Joan pursued a career in nursing. She graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There, she was also the dedicated organist for daily morning Masses. Following graduation, she began her nursing career at the Cleveland Clinic. Returning to the area, Joan continued her nursing career at the Weirton General Hospital, culminating as Operating Room Nursing Supervisor at St. John Hospital, in Steubenville.

Joan was a dedicated member of the St. John Hospital Heather Twig philanthropic organization and held various chair positions for their annual Gardenia Ball fundraising event. She was routinely involved in the Parent Teacher Association of Harding and Holy Rosary Grade Schools and their various fundraising events. Joan was an active parishioner at St. Peter Catholic Church was a faithful member of the church’s Perpetual Adoration prayer group. Throughout her life, she compassionately and selflessly cared for several aging relatives and friends. Her passions included playing the piano, organ, gourmet cooking, travel and reading.

Joan’s most cherished role was that of Mother and “Nana”. She leaves behind her three adoring children who will dearly miss her gentleness, kindness, gracefulness, love and inner beauty: Mark Giannini of Steubenville, Dr. Lauren (Giannini) Leber of Wellesley, MA (son-in-law, Dr. Geoffrey Leber), Michele (Giannini) Patterson (son-in-law, Dr. Gary Patterson) of Pittsburgh, PA. She will be dearly missed by her five beautiful grandchildren: Andrea Gelman and Alex Gelman (both of Pittsburgh, PA) and Eric, Alexander and Elissa Leber (all of Wellesley, MA).

Heartfelt thanks are extended to the caring staff of Trinity Hospital West and IC Care of Wheeling, especially at the time most needed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Catholic Church of Steubenville, Ohio.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3-7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fr. Tim Huffman will celebrate. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held Thursday at 3pm.
