Nicholas "Nick" Vergis

On Dec. 27, 2019, Nicholas "Nick" Vergis, 86, passed away at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Nick was born Oct. 25, 1933 in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Vergis, who immigrated to America from Greece; Anthony from Karpathos and his wife, Eltheria (Pasvanis), from Icaria.

Nick graduated from Steubenville Big Red High School, Class of 1952, and served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, including 2 years during the Korean War. On Sept. 21, 1958, he married Donna (Boni) Vergis. He worked at Weirton Steel as a welder for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He later managed Sammi's Bar on Bantam Ridge for a decade.

Known as "Papa" to his family, Nick loved Steubenville Big Red football, mowing the lawn, drinking beer and having a good time with his friends. He loved and enjoyed his life.

Nick was preceded in death by his son, Anthony John "Tony" Vergis, in 2002, and numerous brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Donna Vergis; their children, Mark (Sherry) Vergis of Wellsville, Nicki Ann (John) Giannamore of Wintersville; grandchildren, Nickole (Nathan) Vergis, Tommy (Raven) Vergis, Sammi Giannamore; and one great-grandchild, Juniper Rose Vergis. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Phillips of Las Vegas, NV, and Marcy Barcus of New Philadelphia, OH.

Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. Additional visitation will be held Tuesday at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church from 10 am until time of services at 11 am. A trisagion service will be held Monday at 6:45 pm.
