Renee J. Cortez

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Renee J. Cortez, affectionately known as Nunny, on March 3, 2018 at Valley Hospice. She was 89 years old. 

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank; son, Frank J. Cortez Jr.; grandson Charles (CJ) Cortez, and sister Eleanor Glikes.

Nunny was born on September 17, 1928 in Steubenville Ohio, the daughter of the late Richard and Jenny Winstel. 

Renee was a member of Triumph of the Cross Catholic Church, and a long-time member of the former St. Pius X Catholic Church, where she served as Treasurer, and then VP of the Catholic Women’s Club. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years.  Nunny was an avid card player, traveler, and reader. 

Surviving are one son, Richard (Marcy) Cortez of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Cynthia (Dr. John) Harrison of Lexington, Kentucky, Rene (Jay W.) Smith of Toronto, and Kathy (Michael) Shoemaker of Stoutsville; one sister, Betty Trainor, six grandchildren, Jennifer, Christy, Ashley, Jessica, Kendra, and Victoria; and nine great-grandchildren. 

A funeral liturgy with mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Triumph of the Cross Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery Coronation Mausoleum. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Central High School, 320 Westview Avenue, Steubenville, Ohio 43952.
