Obituary

Anthony “Paul” Welsch, of Steubenville, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday at Valley Hospice.  

Paul was born October 20, 1931 in Glen Dale, WV.  He was the son of the late Anthony and Loretta (Ringler) Welsch.  Paul attended St. Francis Xavier School in Moundsville and graduated from Moundsville High School in 1949.

Paul married his wife, Elizabeth “Betty Lou” (O’Leary) on November 24, 1951.  He entered the United States Air Force in February 1952 where he served in Japan until 1955. He then worked at Kaul Clay Company and Titanium Metals, before retiring from the Ohio Power Company.  

He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts who helped raise him, and a son-in-law, Bob Leist. In addition to the love of his life, Betty,  he is survived by his 6 daughters; Cathy (Tim) Leist of New Philadelphia, Paula (Bob) Leist of Steubenville, Debbie Welsch of Steubenville, Terri  (Jack) McGuire of Mingo Jct, Patty (Jim) Fisher of Centreville, VA, Peggy (John) Wright of Mingo Jct, and one son, Michael (Michelle) Welsch of Millersport, OH.  He also leaves behind fourteen  grandchildren: Paul (Mary) Leist, Tim (Sunea) Leist, Bobby (Susanna) Leist, John (Courtney) McGuire, Beth McGuire, Michelle (Charlie) Dickey, Josh (Courtney) McGuire, Christine ( Ryan) O’ Donnell, JC Fisher, Ted and Alex Welsch, and John (Carli Winstel), Jacob, and Caleb Wright and five great- grandchildren: Ella, Luna, Charlotte, Cassidy, and Jack and a brother, Tom (Sharon) of Glen Dale, WV.

Paul was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Francis Society- where he served as President, The Knights of Columbus, The American Legion, and Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Paul’s greatest love was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.  “He was a quiet soul with a giant heart.”

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3-7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Fr. James Dunfee and Fr. Tim Huffman will celebrate. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held Thursday at 5 pm.
