Immaculate Heart of Mary Brother Dominic Carroll died February 25, 2025 at the age of 96. Brother Dominic was born July 19, 1928, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, one of the seven children of James Edwin and Anna Mary Stemler Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Charles, James, and Donald.
He is survived by his sister Mary Lou Carroll and brother Kenneth.
A graduate of St. Augustine School, Jeffersonville, and St. Xavier High School, Louisville, Kentucky, Brother Dominic attended the teacher’s college at The Athenaeum of Ohio, Cincinnati, before he entered the Brothers of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in November 1950. Brother Dominic was among the first to be professed to the religious order, founded in 1948 by Bishop John King Mussio, Steubenville’s first bishop.
On Feb. 2, 1960, Brother Dominic made his profession at Holy Name Cathedral, Steubenville. In 1953, he was appointed assistant superintendent of the Villa Maria Rest Home, Steubenville, a facility for the elderly, administered by the religious order. He served in that position until the rest home closed in 1975. During that time, he was licensed by the state of Ohio as a practical nurse. In addition, Brother Dominic ministered as a novice master for the religious order from 1952-56.In 1975, Bishop Mussio awarded him with the Caritas medal, an honor bestowed for service to the diocese and church.
In 1990, Brother Dominic received the Cross “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” (“For the Church and the Pontiff”) from Bishop Albert H. Ottenweller, Steubenville’s second bishop. The Cross is one of the medals granted directly by the Holy Father.
Brother Dominic was the first superior of the brothers and was the superior general at the time of his passing. He also assisted the late Bishop Gilbert I. Sheldon, third bishop of Steubenville. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 2 at Holy Rosary Church, Steubenville, with a vigil service at 3:45pm. Visitation will also be held at Holy Rosary Church March 3 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral Mass. Bishop Emeritus Paul J. Bradley of Kalamazoo, Michigan, the former apostolic administrator of Steubenville, will celebrate the funeral Mass. Burial will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
