Charles E. Morris, of Steubenville, passed away at the age of 94 early in the morning on Thursday, August 8, 2024. The son of William and Doris (Douthit) Morris, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Agnes (Chilensky) in 2023 and his siblings Clifford, Harold, Beulah, and Mildred. He is survived by his sons Charles and Gregory, along with his four grandchildren. He was a member of Bell Chapel United Methodist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner, and Templar.
He was known by many as “Chief” after he attained the naval rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1968. He served proudly in the Naval Reserves from 1947 to 1984 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres.
At Brilliant High School he lettered in football, primarily playing safety wearing number 13. After retiring from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in the late 1980’s he remained always on the go – only slowing down in recent months. He served his community for decades through his work at the City Rescue Mission and through Shriners’ charities. He was a regular at American Legion Post 557 - at one time serving as District Chaplin.
He was passionate about aviation and was an active pilot since making his first solo at Herron Airport. Pilots who knew him still talk about the time he flew a Taylorcraft to Cuba in the 1950’s navigating only with the sun and a compass. He also was a skilled bowler into his 90’s and someone who loved to tinker with electronics and devices.
He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and neighbors who will always remember him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Legion and to Shriners’ Children’s Hospitals.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Friday at 10 am, Pastor Seth Filburn will officiate. Burial will follow in Fort Steuben Burial Estates.
