Donald Mansfield Spencer: beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Friday, September 15, 2023 at the age of 92.
Don was born in Ramsey, New Jersey on October 17, 1930 to Catharine and Raymond Spencer. Don was married to Lois Anne Bacon for 62 years until her death in 2020. Don is the father of five children: Cathy Spencer of Crestview, Florida, Susie Gilstrap of Fairhope, Alabama, Ginny Pankus of Wilmington, North Carolina, Bob Spencer, II of Covington, Kentucky and Mary Elizabeth Tinnirello of Cortland, Ohio. He has 22 grandchildren and more than 20 great grandchildren. Don’s older brother Raymond Spencer, Jr. predeceased him and his younger brother Robert W. Spencer, I lives in Atlanta, Georgia.
Don graduated from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey and earned his Master’s in Business Administration from New York University. He served as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. For 3 years, Don held management positions with AT&T and Bell phone companies. In 1984, he retired and moved with his family to Steubenville, Ohio. Don worked at The Franciscan University of Steubenville in the Conference Office and as Director for Financial Aid for about 10 years before retiring permanently.
Don converted to Catholicism in the 1970’s while living in North Carolina and has over the years been active in various Catholic Church outreaches, including the Charismatic Movement, Marriage Encounter and Cursillo. Don loved serving the needs of others in the community and volunteering at the Samaritan House and at Holy Name Cathedral’s soup kitchen. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church before moving to live near family in his later years.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 2-5 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be held Saturday at 10 am at Holy Family Catholic Church. Don will be buried at a future date beside his wife, Lois Anne Spencer at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville.
