Dr. Santiago “Sonny” Ching died peacefully at home on May 28, 2021 in Steubenville, Ohio at the age of 81. Santiago was born in Manila, Philippines, and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Santo Tomas. He immigrated to the United States in 1964 and completed his medical training in Elizabeth, NJ and Cleveland, OH. In 1972, he relocated to Steubenville, OH and established a gastroenterology practice, from which he retired in 2010. Santiago was dedicated to community service. He established a foundation providing funding for science education and scholarships to graduates of Steubenville High School. He frequently volunteered at the Ohio Valley Health Center and created a monthly “Talk with the Doc '' series at Prime Time Senior Center. He enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished cook who loved to feed friends and family. Santiago is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Wilma (Deaton) Ching; two daughters, Rebecca Ching (Simon Lilley) of Cleveland, OH and Andrea Ching (Benjamin Winkler) of New York, NY; son Stephen Ching (Genevieve Gallagher) of Grandview, OH; three sisters, Ching Shiok-Dinh of China, Ching Shiok-Hui “Tessie Ching” of Steubenville, OH and Carmen Lemley (Larry) of Wheeling, WV; four brothers, José “Joe” Cheng (Tessie) of Dryden, ON, Roberto Ching of Steubenville, OH, Claudio “Tony” Ching (Lily) of Culpepper, VA and Ernesto “Ernie” Ching (Jocelyn) of Wintersville,OH; three grandchildren, Miles Winkler, Beatrix Winkler and Paloma Ching and 23 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kiac and Maxima Cheng. A private family service will be held, in accordance with Santiago Ching’s wishes.
