Edward Grantonic Obituary

On Saturday, June 15th, our beloved father, husband, and grandpa, Edward (Ed) J. Grantonic, 92, of Mingo Junction, OH, was gladly welcomed home to be with the Lord and reunited with his wife, Katie, who departed from this life last year after 66 years of marriage. Dad touchingly passed in the middle of us playing a love song he used to sing to his wife. He just couldn’t wait to see Katie again.

Ed did an excellent job supporting his family, which is no easy feat having four sons and two daughters to raise. Working next to his loving and devoted wife, he established a sizable vegetable garden and continued to garden well into his 70’s to provide for his family and shared the abundance with others. Ed was always ready to jump in and assist his family or anyone who needed help at a moment’s notice and was always giving with everything he had. In addition to his love of hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and attending airshows in Dayton, OH, and Oshkosh, WI, he enjoyed, in his younger years, taking to the skies flying small-scale passenger airplanes.

Ed proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and  was stationed on the USS Salem in the Mediterranean Sea. He was then employed as an electrician on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Even when Alzheimer's set in, he was still able to recall a great deal about his time in the military, his time working on the railroad, and the family campground where he spent many years deer hunting. Ed was a meat cutter at several area Kroger stores until his retirement. He liked working at the Spring Hills Golf Club in East Springfield, OH, after his retirement.

Ed was the son of the late John and Anna L. Grantonic of Richmond, OH, and had 5 other siblings.  He was a devout catholic by faith and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Mingo Jct., OH.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three infant daughters, Sharon, Cheryl, and Helen; one son, Ken; two brothers, George and Tom; two sisters, Florence Hirkala and Mary Agnes Matthews.

Ed will be deeply missed by his five children; Karen (Mike) Menzel from Mingo Jct. OH, Edward T. (Karen) Grantonic from Huber Heights, OH, Bob Grantonic from Bloomingdale, OH, John Grantonic from Bloomingdale, OH, Carol Jean (David Shawn) Mace from Gnadenhutten, OH; eight grandchildren, Kristen (Leonard) Gagliardi,  Marissa Menzel, Ryan Grantonic, David (Zoee) Grantonic, Mary Beth (Chris) Hess, Amy Grantonic, Kevin and Kari Mace; three great grandchildren, Aidan and Isaac Grantonic, and Lily Hess; brother, John (Barbara) Grantonic, along with many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited for visitation at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 204 St. Clair Ave. Mingo Jct. on Wednesday, June 19th from 10 a.m. until the time of mass at 12:00 p.m., with Fr. Jim Dunfee as celebrant. Burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
