PUNKE, EDWARD F., age 87, husband of Shirley (Klug) Punke, of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 26.  The last days of his life were spent surrounded by family.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher H. and Claire (Feist) Punke, and his brother, Monsignor Robert H. Punke.

Ed was born on January 25, 1935 in Steubenville, Ohio.  He attended St. Peter’s Grade School, Catholic Central High School, and graduated from the College of Steubenville in 1957 with a degree in business.  He also served in the Army Reserve.  In 1960, Ed married Shirley Klug, and they raised their four daughters in Steubenville, with all of them attending Catholic Central.

Ed was the owner of Branagan and Punke Shoes in Steubenville and later worked at the Jefferson County Department of Human Services.  After that, he enjoyed doing landscaping with his two grandsons, Patrick Spiess and Nicholas Stimpert.

Throughout his life, Ed served in many community organizations including as President of Catholic Central School Board and President of the Diocesan School Board.  He was also a member of the Serra Club, Century Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, and the Downtown Business Association.  

Ed was an avid supporter of Steubenville Catholic Central High School.  He was featured in the Summer 2012 issue of Franciscan Way magazine in the Alumni Profile and was quoted as saying: “My great passion other than my family is Catholic Central High School.  I’m a big believer in Catholic education.”  Ed also enjoyed working outside on his lawn and gardens, which were always beautifully kept.  Ed was a loving husband, father, Pap, and Grandpa, and a friend to many in the community.  He will be dearly missed.

Ed is survived by his wife Shirley and his children, Monica (Raymond) Leech, Anne (Tim) Copeland, Mary (Eric) Balzano, and Katie (Rich) Stimpert, all from Steubenville. His grandchildren include Marina Leech; Patrick Spiess and Hannah (Greg) Gjura; Eva, Grace, Lilly, Jude, and Anthony Balzano; and Nicholas Stimpert.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 3-7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be Wednesday at 6:45 pm.
