Elaine Sleever Obituary

Elaine M. Sleever O.F.S., 80, of Steubenville died Monday, February 3, 2025 at Trinity West. She was born November 15, 1944 in Dover, NJ. She is the daughter of the late Vincent and Rosalie Schiavo Cooper. She is also preceded in death by her brothers Jim and Lawrence “Larry” (living spouse Arlene) Cooper; sisters Terese Henry, Virginia Guerra and Mary Cooper Finnegan.

Elaine worked with youth and children who were abused in New Jersey. Elaine also worked with the WIA in Steubenville where she taught students about workforce and development. Elaine was the founding director of the first domestic violence shelter program in rural upstate New York. She was a graduate of State University at Oneonta New York, with a BA in Psychology, Franciscan University with a Masters in Counseling and State University New York at Cobleskill with an associates degree in in Liberal Arts.

Elaine was a member and lector of Triumph of the Cross Parish and the Community of God’s Love. She was also a Professed Franciscan Secular. She enjoyed coordinating volunteers at the Heritage Village to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Friendship Room. Elaine lived a quiet life interacting with friends and family. She loved EWTN TV, Divine Mercy Devotions, making crafts and watching birds. She was a loving, caring person that will be missed by all especially her son.      

Surviving are son William Sleever of Steubenville; sisters Rosalie Scheckel, Alice Cooper, Dolores Kloczko and brother Thomas Cooper; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her comfort cat Sylvester.

The memorial funeral Mass for Elaine will be Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 1 pm. First hour of quiet prayer will start at 12 pm with Divine Mercy prayer said and Mass will follow at 1 pm. Triumph of the Cross, 200 Rosemont Ave. Steubenville, Ohio 43952, the Holy Rosary Church building, near Catholic Central High School.

Friends are invited to a potluck (bring/share dishes) lunch following the funeral at Heritage Village.
