Elizabeth "Beth" May Downs

Elizabeth “Beth” May Downs (née Harris), age 92, of Hopedale, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

Born on March 15, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Earle and Florence Harris, Elizabeth lived a life defined by compassion, dedication, and quiet strength. She devoted her career to nursing and nursing education, touching the lives of countless patients and future nurses through her expertise, patience, and caring guidance. A favorite hobby was crafting beautiful floral arrangements, which brought joy to her family and friends.

As a loving mother of six, Beth poured her heart into her family. She was married to James Downs; he preceded her in death. She is survived by her children: Joseph, John, Steven, Mary, Theresa, and Maria. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earle and Florence Harris, and brothers Hugh and John.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, June 13th at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amsterdam, Ohio. Viewing will be at Haight Funeral Home in Sykesville, Maryland on Thursday, June 18th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at St. Michael Poplar Springs Catholic Church Cemetery, Mt. Airy, Maryland on Friday, June 19th at 11 a.m.

Beth’s legacy of love, service, and resilience will live on in the many lives she shaped and in the hearts of her family and friends.
