George Zrinyi Obituary

George Zrinyi, 93, of Steubenville passed away peacefully at home Saturday February 17, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 16, 1931 in Steubenville,OH. He is the youngest son of the late Michael and Ethel ┼Éry Zrinyi from Hungary. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife Teresa “DeeDee” Panebianco Zrinyi, whom he married July 20, 1955, and by his six older siblings, Helen Kovach, Michael, Alex, Victor, Ted, and Albert Zrinyi and many nieces and nephews, as well as his step father Martin Bende.

He was a member of Triumph of the Cross Parish and a graduate of Catholic Central High School class of 1950, where he was a standout running back. He is a veteran who fought in the Korean War and was active in the local American Legion.

He was an avid sports fan and loved rooting for the Steelers, the Pirates and the Penguins but Notre Dame was his long time favorite football team. He attended their games in full Fighting Irish attire whenever he had the opportunity. He was also a member of the Hungarian Cultural Club, the Italian American Cultural Club, Funseekers, American Legion Argonne post 33, the VFW, and Jefferson Sportsmans Association.

He enjoyed playing Bocci and poker with his buddies.

He is survived by daughters Cindy (Partner Sue Watson) Zrinyi of Portland, OR and Cheryl (Scott) Seaman of Houston, TX; and sons, George (Kris) Zrinyi Jr. of Commerce, MI, and Martin "Maz" (Patty Shell) Zrinyi of Pittsburgh; brother-in-law Lou (Jeanette) Panebianco of Mingo Jct.; five grandchildren Mindy, Michelle, Carolyn Marie, Fernando and Carly; six great grandchildren Jace, Harper, Isabelle, Saylor, Savannah, and Rye.

Calling hours will be Tuesday Feb 20, from 3-6 pm pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 1:00 pm at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matthew Gossett will be the celebrant. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
