Hilda Mehalik Obituary

Hilda R. Mehalik, 91, better known as “Toby” to her family and friends, passed away December 1, 2020 at Trinity Hospital West. She was born on March 2, 1929 in Lombar, PA, but grew up on a small country farm in Steubenville, OH. She was the daughter of the late John and Anna Spiller Bodo.

She was preceded in death by her husband George T. Mehalik in 2015.  She was also preceded in death by her sister and best friend, Lena Bodo and four brothers:  Frank, Robert, Bino and David.

Toby is survived by her brother Jim (Judy) Bodo, daughter, Annette (Bob) Teeman and her sons:  Michael (Suzie) Mehalik, George (Sandy) Mehalik and Ron (Tammy) Mehalik.  She is also survived by grandchildren:  Meghan (Scott) Cunningham and Robert Teeman and great grandchildren Mick and Quinn Cunningham, who lovingly referred to her as Grandma Train (in reference to Toby in the Thomas the Train cartoon).

Toby graduated from Jefferson Union High School and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.  She was cherished beyond measure by her family and was the helping spirit who did anything she could to assist others, especially her children and grandchildren.

She was a homemaker most of her life but contributed to the WW II war effort after graduating from high school by working in the Tin Mill at Weirton Steel as a tin flopper.  Toby loved having her family and friends gathered around her kitchen table.  Her infamous Sunday spaghetti dinners will live on in the minds of those who attended regularly; and a good time was always had by all.  Toby was also the family historian for nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. for answers to questions about Bodos and Mehaliks alike as her memory was as sharp as ever.  She lived a long life, having a great influence on so many who will remember her with love.

Friends are invited to a Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 11:00 am on Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Fr. Bradley Greer will celebrate. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Masks will be required at church.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Prime Time Center, 300 Lovers Lane, Steubenville, OH 43953.
