James E. (Jim) Kirkpatrick, Jr., 87, of Wintersville passed away peacefully on July 23, 2023, at Trinity Hospital surrounded by family.
He was born March 18, 1936, at Ohio Valley Hospital to the late James E. and Mildred Virginia (Jean) Carnahan Kirkpatrick.
Jim was a proud graduate of Toronto High School, Class of 1954 where he was a star baseball and basketball player, and remained involved as a member of the THS Alumni Association. His baseball career continued with the American Legion, Navy, and he played briefly in the semi-pros.
Jim attended Duke University and the College of Steubenville where he was a member of the Delta Sigma fraternity. While attending “Steubie U,” Jim took a break from school and served for four years in the United States Navy. He returned to the College of Steubenville following his service to continue his education, which is also where he met his wife of nearly 61 years, Joyce Shuck Kirkpatrick who survives him.
Serving his community was of great importance to Jim. He was a member of both the Wintersville and Indian Creek High School Boosters. He was an electrician at TIMET, served on the Grievance Committee, and served multiple years as President of USWA Local 5644. Jim was a member of the Indian Creek Board of Education, serving a term as President and as the IC representative on the JVS Board. Jim also spent time as a substitute teacher for the JVS. Following his retirement from TIMET, and taking some time off to do some fishing and camping at Lake Erie, he started doing taxes for the local community, eventually starting Kirk’s Tax Service which served local taxpayers for many years. He was especially proud to receive an honorary diploma at the ICHS 2023 graduation ceremony for his years of service to Indian Creek schools.
In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his brother, John D. (Jack) Kirkpatrick, his infant son Charles in 1975, and his sons Brian and Barry in 1991.
Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce, and three sons: J.E. (Melissa) Kirkpatrick III of Belpre, OH, T. Sean (Lisa) Kirkpatrick of Wadsworth, OH, and Chad D. Kirkpatrick (Dawn Farver) of Chalfont, PA. He is also survived by three grandsons, Alan, Dillon, and Spencer Kirkpatrick, and one granddaughter, Aurora “Rory” Farver.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 30, 2023, from 11-2pm at Mosti Funeral Home Sunset Chapel. A celebration of life will follow at 2pm.
