James "Jimmy" Provenzano Obituary

James (Gennaro) Vittorio Provenzano, 77, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from complications of COVID-19 at Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

The second son to Francesco and Idora (Travaglino) Provenzano was born in Belmonte, Calabria, Italy, on August 7, 1943. He came to the United States with his family in 1955. He and his 4 brothers lived on the south end of Steubenville next to the Holy Name Cathedral where he would attend grade school. He graduated from Steubenville High School in 1962 and went on to obtain a BA from the College of Steubenville. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity, Columbus Club, and Italian American Cultural Club, and he also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was previously married to Patricia Provenzano, with whom he resided. He was proud father to their daughter Angela, always touting her job or accomplishments, or where she was traveling next.

In his younger years he enjoyed summers at Atlantic City working at the pizza shop. Jim started his career in insurance with General Adjustment Bureau in Steubenville, and then embarked on a long career with State Auto Insurance as a Senior Adjuster. He was also passionate about coaching soccer. He coached many area youth teams throughout the valley over the years, including at Catholic Central and Big Red.

He never came empty-handed when he showed up at your door. He was the first to bring you a plate of homemade food, or vegetables from his very own garden or from the Farmer’s Market where he loved to work and socialize. He was the last to leave after he helped clean up.

He loved to play cards with his friends and enjoyed cooking food for them. He also loved going to the casino and could often be seen at the craps table.  He was fond of spending time outside visiting with his neighbors, and he enjoyed getting away to Florida to visit family in the winter months. He adored his many nieces and nephews and their children. In return, they adored their Uncle Jimmy. The family loved listening to him describe his almost fortunes at the track, his time in Italy, and the family ancestry tree.

In addition to Pat and Angela he leaves behind his four brothers, Benny (Linda) of Colerain, OH, Ferruccio “Fred” (Kris), Alfred (Barb), and Albert (Gail) all of Steubenville.  He also leaves behind a large extended family of Provenzano and Travaglino cousins.

The family is forever grateful to his nephew Dr. Aaron Provenzano and his cousin Dr. Rhonda Travaglino Parda who kept the family informed of his treatments. Thank you to all those who have reached out and prayed for his recovery.  He is so incredibly loved by his family and friends and the community. Although at this time there will not be a viewing, as we wish to keep everyone safe, there will be a celebration of Jim’s life at a later date.
