Jane Burke Obituary

Jane Elizabeth (Fitzmaurice) Burke, 67, of Steubenville died suddenly on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at Trinity West Hospital.

Born November 1, 1956 in Manchester, NH, she was the daughter of the late John “Jack” and Ruth (Quigley) Fitzmaurice. She was also preceded in death by her sister Alice Salvini.

A Registered Nurse, Jane spent most of her life in New Jersey where she worked in a variety of roles - including labor and delivery, NICU and the emergency room - at several different hospitals.  A 1978 graduate of Marquette University with a B.S. in Nursing, Jane began her career, which spanned more than 45 years, at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital before branching into administration.

But she always put on her scrubs and returned to the floor or to the unit where she delighted in the camaraderie and in mentoring younger nurses. She was “retired” from Weirton Medical Center where she was an ER nurse for many years and where she continued to take weekend shifts long after her “retirement.” She was proud to do that job and, with her no-nonsense attitude, was known for the care and compassion she showed her patients.

A practicing Catholic, she was a member of Triumph of the Cross Parish in Steubenville and traveled abroad on many medical missions, including several trips to earthquake-torn Haiti and one to China.

Surviving are a daughter, Meagan (Mark) Pirro; a son, Brendan (Mary) Burke of Huntington, NY; her brother Jack (Mari-An) Fitzmaurice of Williamsburg, VA; and seven grandchildren Donnie, Trinity Jane, Quinn, Liam, Massimo, Rosalie and Colin.

More than anything, Jane loved being ”Nana” to her grandkids.

Visitation will be held Monday from 3-6 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be held Tuesday at 10 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matthew Gossett will celebrate. Burial will be private and held at a later date.
