Joanne Skulas McCraley, 77, of Bloomingdale, Ohio, died Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Trinity West after a decades-long battle with cancer. Joanne was born in 1947 in Steubenville, the daughter of the late John and Ann Sergakis Skulas. Joanne is survived by her husband of 55 years, Patrick McCraley, daughters Katherine Anne (Rosina) McCraley of Redlands, CA and Kelley Marie (partner Lindsey Brent) of Wintersville, and her beloved guinea pig, Maggie. Also surviving are her sister Connie (George) Sergakis of Bloomingdale, brothers Tony (Karen) Skulas of Utica, OH, and George Skulas of Myrtle Beach, SC, and many nieces and nephews.
Joanne was a lifelong educator. Joanne began her teaching career teaching grades 4-8 at All Saints St. Peters in Steubenville (1969-1983) before going on to teach grades 7-8 English at Indian Creek Junior High (1996-2011) and teaching English, Literature, Composition, and Mythology at Indian Creek High School (2011-2017) until her retirement. In addition, Joanne served as a Praxis Assessor for the state of Ohio, as well as being a cooperating teacher for Franciscan University, a new teacher mentor at Indian Creek, a Virtual Learning Instructor in Steubenville, an Indian Creek Master Teacher, an Indian Creek Education Association Treasurer, and was MAX and LDC trained.
In her spare time, Joanne was a member of the Ohio Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority, formerly serving as president and treasurer. She was also a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member of Holy Trinity Philoptochos, formerly serving as president and treasurer, as well as on Parish Council, where she formerly served as assistant treasurer. Joanne was also a member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Franciscan University, where she served as an instructor, board member, and president.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-5 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. Also on Saturday from 10 am until time of services at 11 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Joanne’s dear friend, Dr. Stephen Kuruc, and Dr. Aaron Provenzano and staff, as well as the staff at Valley Hospice, for caring for their wife and mother.
