John Afek, 69, of Coshocton, Ohio, passed away on January 30, 2026 at The Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, Ohio, following complications from surgery. He was surrounded by family, who were present as John received his last rites.
John was born in Steubenville, Ohio, the third of what was to be six children. He grew up in a busy household where there was a lot of love. John received his Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from Franciscan University, which he used to start his own CPA business in the 1990s. At the time of his death, John was the President of Healing Hearts and active in several local Columbus organizations, where he inspired many with the story of his recovery. He participated several times in the Transplant Olympics where, most recently, he was on the basketball team. John will be remembered as a devoted man who loved to make others laugh, though no one found John funnier than he did. One of his favorite activities was boxing, a sport he picked up at 16 years old.
John was preceded in death by parents Helen and Paul Sr, brothers, Paul Jr, Robert and Christopher, sister, Linda, and beloved mother of his children, Karylee, and is survived by children, Andrew (partner Kelly) and Annalee (partner Gabrielle), brother, James, loving partner, Loretta, niece, Jamie, nephews, Greg and Brian (partner Tarrah), great nephews, Jack and Cooper, and great nieces, Fiona and Kali.
Memorial visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at Mosti Funeral Home, in Steubenville, Ohio from 3pm to 6pm. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be held Wednesday, February 11, at 11:30am at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matthew Gossett will celebrate. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
