John Ruiz Obituary

John David Ruiz, 34, of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. He was born on March 13, 1991. Known to many as JD, John or Tex, he was a man defined by his infectious laughter and unwavering kindness. John spent his life ensuring those around him had a reason to smile.

A proud veteran, JD served in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Qatar during the Global War on Terrorism. He deeply loved his military career and maintained a brotherhood with his comrades that lasted long after his service ended.

When he wasn't in uniform, JD was often found with a microphone in his hand or a deck of cards on the table. Music was his outlet and his joy; he loved to sing all genres and was known for his soulful voice. He was also a dedicated member of a weekly card-playing group, where his passion for Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering brought sixteen close friends together every week. An animal lover at heart, he also spent his free time volunteering at the local animal shelter.

JD is reunited in peace with his father, Juan Ruiz. He is survived by his mother, Christina Posada Hinojosa (Ricardo Hinojosa); his son, Wyatt David Ruiz; his sister, Chrystal Ruiz; and his honorary brother, Matthew Spence. He also leaves behind his grandparents, David and Yolanda Posada; aunts Diane Nawara (Chris Nawara) and Paula K. P. Hughes (Thomas Hughes); as well as a large community of cousins, extended family, coworkers, and Army buddies who cherished him.

Memorial service will be held Thursday at 5:00 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. Interment will be held Wednesday, February 11, Time: 9 am, Mass, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Portland, TX; Full Military Honors, Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Corpus Christi, TX, at 11 am followed by a reception at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Portland, TX at 12 pm.

The family thanks you for your love, prayers, and generosity during this difficult time. Thank you for being a part of his life and for the kindness you showed him.
