Joseph Nolan Obituary

Joseph L. Nolan, 77, of Medina, formerly of Steubenville, passed away Thursday, November 24th at Hospice of Western Reserve, Medina County after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Bay City, MI to the late F. Joseph and Shirley (Ferguson) Nolan on June 27, 1945. An only child, Joe grew up in the Cumberland, MD where he graduated from LaSalle High School in 1963.

Joe graduated from The College of Steubenville with a degree in Comprehensive Social Studies in 1967. While in school, he was a 4-year letter winner on the Baron’s baseball team which later earned him a 2011 induction into the Baron Hall of Fame. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and enjoyed many close friendships with his “brothers” until his passing.

Joe married his college sweetheart, Pamela “Penny” Pinciaro, on January, 1967. Together they had two children, Ryan (Janet) Nolan of Steubenville and Ellen (Christopher)Hess of Medina. Joe was the proud grandfather of four grandsons: Darius Nolan of Steubenville, and Patrick, William, and Benjamin Hess of Medina.

Joe worked as an educator for 41 years and taught in the Steubenville City School District and Indian Creek School District, before finally retiring from Catholic Central High School in 2008. Joe coached baseball and golf for a combined 35 years during his teaching career. He served as the OVAC director for golf for 15 years. He could be heard on on WSTV radio as part of the broadcast crew for high school football games across the Ohio Valley.

He was a member of (Holy Rosary) Triumph of the Cross Parish. In 2008, Joe and Penny moved to Medina. There he became a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and worked part time as a cart attendant and starter at Fox Meadow Country Club.

Joe was truly a people person whose family joked that he’d never met a stranger. He was an avid golfer for most of his life, a diehard fan of the University of Notre Dame, and had an affinity for the Jersey Shore that was sparked by many summers spent living there with his beloved grandfather.
