Kathryn Kaschak Obituary

Kathryn Gordon Kaschak, 99, of Steubenville passed away peacefully Thursday, August 7, 2020, at her home.

Born February 18, 1921 in Steubenville, Ohio, Kathryn was the oldest child of the late Peter and Marie (Hazencomb) Gordon. She was preceded in death by her sisters Carolyn Gordon, Jean Vernarsky, and her husband Nicholas G. Kaschak.

Kathryn graduated as the salutatorian from Catholic Central High School in 1939.   While in high school, she worked in the rectory of St. Peter’s preparing meals for the priests.

She attended secretarial school and worked in the office at Catholic Central High School, and for the Draft Board (during WWII).  Later she became the office manager for her father’s optical company, Ace Optical.

Kathryn married her husband, Nicholas, in December 1950.  She and Nicholas lived in St. Louis for a short time where they started their family.

Kathryn applied her strong organizational skills for several employers including the Veteran’s Administration, Kaufman’s in Steubenville in customer service, the Jefferson County Regional Planning Commission, and the College of Steubenville (University of Steubenville).

Her longest tenured employment was twelve years with St. John Medical Center as executive secretary.  She was also a member of the hospital auxiliary.

A member of Holy Family Catholic Church for over 59 years, Kathryn attended daily Mass, and participated in the Holy Family Women’s Club and the St. Francis Society.

In her youth and as an adult, Kathryn liked to roller skate.  She was artistic, painting many landscapes which she shared with her family.  She was an avid reader, wrote poetry, enjoyed sewing, and was an expert at video poker.  Kathryn enjoyed traveling domestically and overseas with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law.  Above all, she was dedicated to her family.

After Kathryn retired from the hospital in the fall of 1987, she showed the depths of her devotion by spending the majority of time loving and caring for her family and grandchildren.  Kathryn was best known for showering her boundless hospitality, grace, and kindness to family members, neighbors, and all who entered her home.

She is survived by her seven loving children: Mary T. Kaschak, Jean Anne (Peter) McCallin, Joan Marie (John) Reda, Nicholas (Jane) Kaschak, Kathy (Ron) Sanders, Carolyn Kaschak, and Paul (Dianne) Kaschak.  Also surviving are her loving grandchildren: Christopher (Dana) Cartledge, Sarah (Joel) Burke, Charlie Daniels, Sarah (Dan) Diamond, Mary E. Kaschak, Theresa Kaschak, Patti Sanders, Nicholas Sanders, Natasha (Jordan) Rutledge, Paul Kaschak, Jr., Maria Kaschak, and Rachel Kaschak. Nine great-grandchildren (Roark, Luke, Clara, and Lainey Cartledge; Marley and Donovan Burke, Zach and Autumn Daniels, and Ella Diamond) as well as beloved nieces and nephews also survive her.

Out of respect for everyone’s safety, there are no calling hours.  The funeral liturgy with Mass will be a private ceremony. A private interment will follow at Mt Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.
