Lois (Bacon) Spencer Obituary

Lois Anne (Bacon) Spencer

August 13, 1935 – April 25, 2020

On Saturday, April 25, the Matriarch of the Spencer family passed through the veil of this life to begin her new eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Our family celebrates her life and faithfulness to her Church and her family.

Lois Anne was born to Catherine and Daniel Bacon in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was the eldest of two daughters. Her younger sister Ellie and her parents preceded Lois in passing.  Lois’ education, immersed in the Catholic Church from elementary school through high school developed and maintained her fierce devotion to the Church, the Sacraments and her family.

In 1957, Lois Bacon met Donald M. Spencer, a dashing United States Air Force officer who stole her heart.  They were married on September 28, 1958 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Together, Don and Lois raised four girls and one boy: Cathy, Susie, Ginny, Bob and Mary Elizabeth. These children were raised as devout Catholics, which eventually convinced Don to migrate his Presbyterian beliefs into the Catholic Church in the mid 1970’s. Her devotion lead both Lois and Don to discover Marriage Encounter and the Charismatic renewal through the Catholic Church. As a loving couple they entered the vibrant, spirit-filled part of their Catholic journey.

Their involvement in the Charismatic Renewal lead Lois to find the College of Steubenville and a dynamic Catholic Franciscan priest named Fr. Mike Scanlan. He transformed this small Ohio Catholic College into a world renowned movement.  This simple encounter with the College set up the legacy that fulfilled Lois’ dream of living in close community with her children, and her children’s children in the Ohio Valley for the last forty years.

Lois is survived by her husband Donald, of sixty-two years and her children, eldest daughter, Cathy Spencer, PhD; Susie Weiss, Ginny Spencer & Edward Pankus;  Robert & Eileen Spencer; and Mary Elizabeth Spencer and her husband Tim Tinnirello.  Lois dearly loved her 22 grandchildren and 16 great grand-children.

The family celebrated Lois’ life at a Mass of Christian Burial with Msgr. Gerald Calovini at Holy Family Church on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 with only ten of her family present during this unprecedented pandemic.  Lois is interred at Mount Calvary Cemetery with her parents Catherine and Daniel Bacon.  The family extends its deep appreciation to the family and friends who generously supported us during this time by providing shelter for the many of our out of town family members and for those who joined us at Mosti Funeral Home and on the live stream of the Mass – thank you for your support.  We look forward to visiting and celebrating with all of you when life returns to normal.
