Mary K. Balkun, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2020 at Sunrise Senior Living, Dublin Ohio, with her daughter Susan at her side. She was born September 28, 1924, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Sava and Sophia Katich.
Mary was a graduate of Steubenville High School and in 1991 retired from Jefferson County Job & Family Services, where she touched the lives of many. She was an avid reader, devouring all the classic novels by her early teens. She perfected many crafts including sewing, knitting & crocheting and was famous for her homemade pizzelles. Known as Bubs to many, she touched the lives of everyone she met and knew no stranger.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alfonse Balkun; brother, John Katich; sisters, Mildred Pompa and Catherine Farmer.
Mary is survived by her 3 daughters: Susan Balkun of Columbus, Ohio, Terry Deleonardis of Overland Park, KS and Stephanie (Robert) Porrecca of Columbus, Ohio; 3 grandchildren: Richard M. Deleonardis, Lisa Cimineri, and Eric Sagun; 3 great-grandchildren: Penelope, Oliver & Leo Cimineri and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother, George Katich; sister-in-law, Geraldine (Geri) Balkun.
Special gratitude to the staff and friends at Prime Time Office on Aging and friends, staff and caregivers of Sunrise of Dublin and Capital City Hospice in Columbus, OH for the loving care given to Mary over the last two years.
Honoring Mary’s request, there will be no service. She will be interred at Union Cemetery at the side of her late husband, Alfonse.
