Marybeth Motter Coleman passed away in Christ on April 22, 2026, at the age of 63 in Steubenville, Ohio. After a truly heroic four-and-a-half-year battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer, our sweet Marybeth is now at rest.
Marybeth was born in Sandusky, Ohio on December 26, 1962. She graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School and Kent State University, where she studied Art Education. She was an artist and especially enjoyed learning to paint icons in recent years.
Marybeth will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, strong faith and joyful spirit. She was admired for her strength, especially during her battle with cancer.
After her family, Marybeth devoted her life to the intersection of faith, children and art. She was extremely active with Holy Family Parish, Steubenville, including teaching art at Vacation Bible School each summer and attending daily Mass. She participated in neighborhood faith activities. Many describe her as a shining light of faith and joy. She was an elementary school art teacher before becoming a full-time parent and homeschooler. She loved the Developmental Disability community, which she joined with the birth of her special needs daughter. She was devoted to the Faith and Light Community for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, originated the Steubenville Chapter, and organized large gatherings.
She volunteered for many years at the Sycamore Youth Center, teaching art classes and assisting as needed. A member of the Franciscan University community by virtue of her husband’s role as a math professor, she welcomed new professors and their families for many years, occasionally taught an art class, and volunteered to be a special needs family case study for students studying to be educators. She made opportunities for students to serve and learn about special needs families through Faith and Light gatherings.
These many circles of service and joy resulted in her being known and loved by many people in the Steubenville area and beyond.
Marybeth cherished and wanted to thank the many family members and friends who generously gave their time, talent and treasure to support her during her lifetime, and especially through her long illness.
Marybeth was preceded in death by her father, Bruce Motter (1996). She is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, Dr. John Coleman, children Nathan (Los Angeles, CA), Emily (Steubenville) and Alex (Reston, VA); Mother, Sheila Motter; and beloved siblings Marla Jeane Maling (Bill, deceased), Allen Motter (Connie) and Adam Motter (Angie). She is also survived by her Father-in-law Tom Coleman; sisters-in-law Kate Picket, Debbie Yoon, Becky Thomas, Michele Coleman and Jenny January; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
