Michael Taylor Obituary

Retired Steubenville Assistant Fire Chief Michael Taylor passed away June 16, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

A committed and dedicated public servant and respected leader by his firefighting peers, Mike spent 31 years protecting the residents of Steubenville as a fire fighter rising to the rank of assistant chief.

Mike was a dedicated union leader throughout his entire career serving as Steubenville Local 228 President for 8 years, Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters District Vice President for 18 years, and as OAPFF President for six years before retiring to spend time with his wife Lisa and their family.

As a fire fighter, Taylor was a mentor, teacher, and role model on how to perform your job, represent your profession and serve the community with honor and dignity. As a union leader he was a fierce advocate for fire fighters and all working people. He was instrumental in defeating Senate Bill 5 in 2011 and protecting workers right to collectively bargain for fair wages, better working conditions, and public safety.  His leadership also helped pass much needed legislation that protected fire fighters diagnosed with occupational cancer. Taylor’s impact on the fire service in Ohio will benefit generations of fire fighters to come.

Even after retiring from the OAPFF, Taylor continued his dedication protecting workers while serving on the board of the Bureau of Ohio’s Workers Compensation.

Born June 7, 1961 to Thomas C Taylor and Christina (Cookie) Riggilo in Steubenville, Mike was a lifelong resident. A 1979 graduate of Steubenville High School,

Mike is survived by his father Thomas C. Taylor; his loving wife Lisa, son Adam, daughters Paige (Garrett Kiedrowski) and Brianna (Austin Hedrick), sister Marylynn (Eric) Kaufmann; grandchildren Taylor Kiedrowski, Rylee and John Hedrick whom he loved dearly and completely enjoyed spending time with.

Mike is preceded in death by his brother Thomas Nicholas Taylor and his mother Christina Taylor.

The family will receive friends on Sunday June 23rd between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Mosti Funeral Home 4435 Sunset Blvd, Steubenville.

A celebration of Mike's life will take place on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Mosti Funeral Home followed by a burial at Union Cemetery in Steubenville.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages contributions/donations be made, in Mikes honor, to the Ohio State University Prostate Cancer Prevention and Therapy Fund at; The Ohio State University Foundation, University Square North, 14 E. 15th Ave., Columbus, OH 43201 Fund No. 302024.
