Neove Young Obituary

Neove K. Young, nee. Kourpas originally of Steubenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, September 28, 2025 at the age of 95.  She was a resident of The Bickford in Rocky River, Ohio where she was under hospice care for Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Clarksburg, W. VA. August 12, 1930 to Steven Kourpas and Helen Georgiaradis Kourpas both of whom were from the beautiful Greek island of Chios in the Aegean Sea.

She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth H. Young (May, 1982), daughter Kenna Sue Young (March, 2008), brothers Gus Kourpas and George Kourpas, beloved sister-in-law Grace Kourpas, nephews Steve Kourpas and Steve Parrish Kourpas and niece, Helen Ann Moore (Russell).

She is survived by son Kevin D. Young (Lori Verchio) of Lakewood, Ohio, son Darren L. Young, (Janet), Hillard, Ohio, granddaughters Madeline Daniel (Jarod), their daughter Isabella, Amelia Gehring (Matthew), their daughter Jovie Jane, grandson Donovan Young, niece Marcella Roark (Fred) and niece Georgette Kurtz.

Neove was the youngest of 3.  From the time she was a child, to the time of her passing, she was always involved in social activities with family and friends. She never missed a chance to be with others, to laugh and joke, to share stories of life’s ups and downs and to bond again with long-time friends and make new ones.  Classmates, fellow parishioners, neighbors, work colleagues and especially family loved Neove dearly.  Her friendships were as genuine as they come.

As a child she played with friends in the neighborhood around her family home on McKinley Avenue in Steubenville, Ohio.  In her teens she played women’s softball.  Throughout her years she could always be found at dances and dinners at her beloved Holy Trinity Greek Church. She volunteered at church festivals. It was a rare Sunday when she was not in church.  She went to Curves Fitness Center more to visit with friends than to actually work out.  Either way, it was the healthy thing to do!  When she moved to an independent living facility in Hillard, Ohio to be near son Darren and family, she attended every single event and took every opportunity to visit with friends in the common areas. At her home in Rocky River, she joined in sing-a-longs, exercise sessions and the weekly Happy Hour.  As did friends in Steubenville, the staff at her home in Rocky River could not get enough of Neove’s wit, charm and her friendly caring manner.  Staff and residents alike loved it when she would break into old time songs… “if I knew you were coming I had baked a cake…” and “…I’m tired and I want to go bed…”  All her life she was the queen of the social butterflies.

Both Neove and her late husband Kenneth graduated from Steubenville Big Red in 1948. They didn’t know one another very well then, but they met years later when they both worked at a dry cleaners and love was born.  They married in 1956 and had 3 children. Neove and Kenneth’s first born, Kenna Sue, was born with Down Syndrome, presenting life-long health and caring challenges.  This proved that Neove was more than a social butterfly. She was an amazing caregiver and a loving mother while Kenneth was a stalwart provider.  Never once was there a complaint from Neove…never a hint of regret or burden. They say love conquers all.  Here was the proof.  Neove included her daughter in all social activities at Holy Trinity Greek Church and with families and friends.  Kenna Sue couldn’t have been a more beautiful soul and her mother saw to it that she lived life to its fullest.  All the while, Neove and husband Kenneth made it a point that their sons would not live in the shadow of their sister’s special needs.  Neove was an infinite source of love and support providing balance for everyone in the family.

When her husband passed at age 51 in 1982, Neove carried on, attending to her daughter’s every need.  Connection to family, friends and church intensified as the queen of social butterflies’ wings strengthened and lifted everyone higher.

Neove’s relationships with all family members was always strong.  She was always close with her mother Helen and brothers Gus and George, making visits with the kids every week. Her nieces and nephews loved her dearly.   Her relationship with her in-laws could not have been stronger.  There were frequent visits with Kenneth’s mother and father who loved seeing their grandchildren! Neove’s door was always open for visits from uncles, aunts and cousins from both sides of the family.

Equally strong were her relationships with next door neighbors and  friends from Holy Trinity Greek Church.  They became part of an extended family, sharing daily conversations about anything and everything.

In February 2022, when Neove moved into her assisted living home in Rocky River, the same patterned repeated.  She quickly became fast friends with everyone around her.

Her son Kevin who lived near would visit most every day.  “Are you hungry?  Would you like something to eat?’ After hello, these were the first words out of her mouth.  The last words were always “I love you.” She was always the very best Mom!

At the moment of her passing, there was a profound look of  peace about her face.  It was no doubt a peace that came with the greetings  from family and friends that were waiting for her in heaven.  Our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend…our dearest queen of the social butterflies found a new set of wings.

May her memory be eternal.
