Raymond A. Ashmead, 100, of Steubenville, died Saturday, February 25, 2022 at the Laurels. He was born August 4, 1921 in Oakdale, PA. He is the son of the late Francis and Agnes McLaughlin Ashmead. He is also preceded in death by his wife Lillian Pompa Ashmead; four brothers, Edward, Russell, Joseph, Francis and one sister, Mary Zriinyi. Also son in law James Vallone.
Surviving are two sons, Raymond (Barb) Ashmead and Daniel (Karen) Ashmead both of Steubenville; One daughter, Judy Vallone of Gambrills, MD; One brother Leo of Lakeland, FL; Seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Ray was a member of Triumph of the Cross Catholic Church, American Legion Argonne Post 33 and the former St. Anthony’s Men’s Club.
Ray served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, received a purple heart, three bronze stars and was a POW in Germany for six months.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 9 am until 11 am at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will follow at 11:30 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
