It is with heavy hearts that the family of Richard J. Cortez announce his transition into eternal rest, on September 29th, 2026 at Allegheny General Hospital after a sudden illness. Rich was born in Steubenville on November 9th, 1942 to the late Alma Jean (Andrews) and John Anthony Cortez as their second son of three.
Rich was a 1961 graduate of Steubenville High School. After graduation, Rich worked for a short time at St. John Hospital in the laundry department before working in the slab yard at Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel before retiring in 1997. Rich was known for great mechanical ability from home repairs, to anything with an engine, and had expertise with anything that had to do with boating; he was known as "Mr. Fix it". In retirement, Rich enjoyed every family event or gathering he could get to, and enjoyed countless hours boating on the Ohio River as well as tinkering with any type of watercraft. Rich also took the selfless role as caregiver for his mother in her final months on Earth in his home with his wife and family. Rich was an active member of the Weirton Marina Club and spent nearly every nice day enjoying the club and faithfully attended every membership meeting and function.
Rich is survived by his wife of 34 years, Elizabeth (Mitchell) Cortez, whom he married on April 25th, 1992, former wife Debbie Phillippi, son John (Amy) Cortez, and four grandchildren: Ariel Cortez, Jordan Quinn, Zackary Burch, and Jonathan Cortez, brothers-in-law Michael (Katie) Mitchell, Ted Mitchell, nieces Kylie and Maliea Mitchell, younger brother David (Marilyn) Cortez, nephew David Cortez, and his favorite shorkie Rascal. Preceding Rich in eternal rest are his parents, older brother Guy, and his daughter Kristina “Kristie” Cortez White.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 12 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. Pastor Kevin Rinkes will officiate.
