Robert Martin Obituary

Robert J. Martin, 95, of Steubenville died Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Carriage Inn of Steubenville. He was born June 3, 1928 in Columbus to Mary Martin Meyers.

Robert was a graduate of Philo High School class of 1947. December 24, 1947 he married his high school sweetheart, Melba E. Swingle who was the idol of his life for 67 years. She passed away May 8, 2015.

He worked for Ohio Ferro Alloys Corporation at both the Philo and Brilliant Plants in various positions which included Lab Tech, Shipping Superintendent and Directors of Stores. After retirement he was hired by Weirton Medical Center during the building of the new hospital as Distribution Manager, then Director of Stores and Print Shop until his retirement in August of 1993.

Robert was a member of the former St. Pius Catholic Church, St. Peter’s and now Holy Rosary at Triumph of the Cross Parish.  Robert served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the Transportation Artice Group. His hobbies were were flying, air show photography on the weekends in the summers, then photography for Rose Angelic during the Dean Martin Festival for 12 years. After his retirement he started to oil paint through his friendship with Dave Barnhouse.

He is a member of the Trustees in the Steubenville Art Association, American Legion Post 33, Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 859, Board member of the Jefferson County Historical Association and the Orders and Medals Society of America.

He is survived by cousins James Martin of Philo, Richard Martin of Franklin, NC, Step sister Joan Gordon of Ruston, LA, wife’s sister Shirley (Don) Newton, nieces Misty Costa of Providence, RI and Keeli Kovach of Greensboro, PA and their families.

Visitation will be held Monday from 10 to 11:30 am at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral Liturgy with Mass will follow at 12 pm at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matt Gossett will celebrate. Burial will then take place in Duncan Falls Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jefferson County Humane Society, 200 Airpark Drive, Wintersville, OH 43953.
