Robert Moran Obituary

Robert “Boney” or “Bob” Moran died at Weirton Medical Center Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Boney was born on December 13, 1924 in Steubenville, OH to Fred and Hazel (Elswick) Moran.

He was a 1942 graduate of Steubenville High School, and one of the biggest fans of the Big Red football team all of his life. After graduation, he briefly worked at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel before enlisting in the Army on April 3, 1943.  He was one of the brave soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach for the D-Day Invasion, and went on to Belgium to fight in The Battle of the Bulge.

After his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Boney married his high school sweetheart, Margie, and built his house in Buena Vista with the help of neighbors, where he lived his whole life. He went back to work for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, where he retired as a foreman of the “80 inch” hot rolling mill in 1979, at the age of 54.

They bought a home in Bradenton, FL, where they spent winters for over 30 years. He loved golfing, fishing, traveling, and dancing. He even did the “Twist” on the stage with Chubby Checker when he was 85 years old at Wheeling Island Casino.

Boney was able to return to Normandy for the 78th Anniversary of D-Day, and spent his 98th birthday in Belgium to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.  He received the highest honor in France by being awarded the French Medal of Honor.

Boney was a fun loving guy. He loved swimming with his grandchildren in the summer, and if he was home in the winter, you could find him sled riding at “Jeff Tech” with them. He loved to cook. One of his specialties was corned beef and cabbage, and his famous homemade pickles.

Boney was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Margery (Burns) Moran, who died on his 94th birthday in 2018.  A sister, Mildred (Moran) Parks, a brother Jim Moran, a nephew Pat Moran, daughter-in law Lisa Moran, and his beloved granddaughter Robin Wyckoff.

He is survived by his two children, Marsha Moran Wyckoff, and Terry Moran. Also surviving are six grandchildren. Kelly Wyckoff Standardi (Andrew) , Casey Wyckoff, Tera Moran, (Bob Miller) , Bobbi Moran, Terry Moran, (Olivia Thorpe), and Jason Hukill. Also surviving are four great grandchildren. Tylee Miller, Lily Moran, Anna Hukill, and Harper Hukill.

The family would like to thank all the nurses who cared for him in the hospital. He loved to sing to all of them!  A special thanks to his home caregivers the last month, Jessie Javins, Madison Still, Alex Staub,  Cindy Montgomery, Zoe Dobbs, and Megan McClain.

According to his wishes, there will not be visitation or services at this time.  However, a memorial celebration will be planned for later this summer.
