Steve J. Markis, age 91, fell asleep in the arms of the Lord on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Gables Care Center, Hopedale, where he lived the last five & a half years of his life. He was born on April 3, 1934, in Steubenville. He is the son of the late Stamatia (Amantos) Markis and John S. Markis, who emigrated to the United States from the beautiful, historic Greek Island of Chios.
He was a resident of Richmond. He graduated as an honor student and member of the National Honor Society from the former Jefferson Union High School (now Edison) in 1952. He had perfect attendance from grades 1–12 and received first place certificates of scholarship in biology and chemistry tests.
At the age of 16, after school, in the evenings and on weekends, he worked as an usher at the Capital Movie Theater in Steubenville. Later, he was promoted to Assistant Manager.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, six months of basic training, followed by one & a half years in Verdun, France, during peaceful times.
Steve was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Steubenville, where he served in the Sunday School for more than 40 years. He was also a member of the Greek Orthodox Youth of America, Holy Trinity Senior Citizens, the Chios Society, and the Homer Chapter #4.
Surviving are his sister Mary Markis of Wintersville; cousins: Steve J. (Alexis) Markis, Woodland Hills, CA, James (Donna) Markis, Redondo Beach, CA, Andrew (Dianne) Markis, Anaheim Hills, CA, Matthew Markis, Vious (Suzie) Pagalos, Ann Arbor, MI, John Pagalos, Sandusky, OH, Lucas Pagalos, Anna (Panteli) Telli, Chios, Greece and Antoni (Katina) Tsimbikos, Athens, Greece; many more second and third cousins.
Steve loved to travel. He made many trips to Las Vegas, California, Florida, Texas, Canada, France, Greece.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday, November 26, from 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Fr. Yanni Verginis will officiate and burial will follow at Fort Steuben Burial Estates.
The family is grateful for the nurses and staff at Gables who cared for Steve for five & a half years and for the special care from Valley Hospice Center.
