Terry Mamula Obituary

Terry Dan Mamula, age 85, passed away Sunday, January 25, peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family in Steubenville, Ohio.

Born on May 19, 1940, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Terry was a proud alumnus of Martins Ferry High School, where he was a standout football player for the Purple Riders. His talent and dedication earned him recognition as an All-Ohio football player in 1957, and he later attended Ohio State University on a football scholarship.

On July 4, 1960, Terry met the love of his life, Laura E. Pobolish. They were married on September 15, 1962, and shared 63 years of marriage rooted in love, partnership, and devotion to family. Together, they raised four children: Lisa Mamula Meddock (Shawn Meddock), Terry Mamula Jr. (Elisheba), Gregory Mamula (Steffanie Frangos), and Sherri Mamula Tandon (Sunil Tandon).

Terry was a proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren: Shawn R. Meddock (Kellsie Brannen), Liam C. Meddock, Sonia L. Tandon, Melanie Z. Mamula, Ajay G. Tandon, Gregory M. Mamula, and Ariana R. Mamula.

Terry dedicated 33 years of distinguished service to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, building a legacy of excellence, integrity, and leadership. He was elected Trooper of the Year five times—in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972, and 1987. His exceptional marksmanship earned him the Superintendent’s Award in 1968, 1977, and 1979, and he was a member of the division’s pistol team for three years. During his career, Terry also served on the Patrol’s tactical weapons team and took great pride in coaching seven newly commissioned officers. He further shared his expertise by teaching law enforcement techniques at Jefferson Community College, mentoring future generations of officers.

Active in his community, Terry was a member of the Steubenville Masonic Lodge, the Steubenville Shrine Club, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 97, and the Steubenville Rifle and Pistol Club. He also enjoyed time with friends through the International Club, Fun Seekers Club, Four Seasons Club, Prime Time, Our Place, and Toronto Seniors. In his free time, Terry enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, gardening, and traveling. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, Ohio State Buckeyes football, and Steubenville Big Red football.

Terry was preceded in death by his father, Duke Mamula; his mother, Dorothy Mamula (Cragulets); and his brother, Charles Mamula. He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura; his four children; seven grandchildren; his brother, Dan Mamula; and sisters-in-law, Doris Mamula and Carolyn Mamula.
