William “Bum” Robert Burchfield, 99, of Steubenville, OH passed away peacefully on Tuesday December 29, 2020 at Gables Care Center.
He was born on December 18, 1921 in Steubenville, OH and he was the son of the late James and Jennie (Clifton) Burchfield. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Thelma “Betty” Burchfield on September 20, 1997 and his sister Mary Alice Putman.
He was a devout member of Finley United Methodist Church.
He graduated from Wells High School in 1939. He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945.
After serving in the United States Army, he worked and retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel where he was an air brake mechanic in the locomotive shop.
He married Betty Tempest Burchfield on April 9, 1946 in Steubenville, OH.
He was an avid golfer at Belleview Golf Course, and he was lucky to have 5 hole-in-ones in his career. He also loved to watch golf, fish, read, listen to music and be with his family. He had fond memories at the Jefferson Sportsman’s Club and Guilford Lake. In his younger years he was a member of the Mason Pilgrim Lodge #691 where he served as the Grand Master for a period of time, he was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Steubenville Shrine Club- Aladdin Shriners and the American Legion Post 33.
He was always happy, smiling, laughing and humming a tune. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his two children Dr. Robert (Sandy) Burchfield of Indianapolis, IN and Cathy (John) Cavanaugh of Richmond, OH; 7 grandchilden, Adam Burchfield, Andrew (Janel) Burchfield, Ben (Danielle) Burchfield, Sarah (Aaron) Henry, John (Amanda) Cavanaugh, Matt (Jamie) Cavanaugh and George Cavanaugh; 12 great grandchildren; his sister Marg Achhammer and his brother Jim Burchfield.

Private services were held, and interment was at the Fort Steuben Burial Estates.
