William (Bill) C. Linn, 76, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain while vacationing with his wife. He was born on July 11, 1947 in Steubenville to Paul and Erma (Criss) Linn.
Bill graduated from Catholic Central High School in Steubenville, Ohio in 1965. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army (1966 – 1968) serving in the 197th Military Police Detachment.
Bill was a Christian by belief and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
He was a lifelong (54 years) member of the Polish Athletic Club and also a member of the American Legion Post 33.
In July 2014, Bill concluded a rewarding career of nearly 44 years at Weirton Steel Company, working his entire career in quality assurance that included 31 years in the tin mill metallurgical department where he held positions of technician, analyst, lead analyst, and lab supervisor. Bill concluded his working career in the technical service area where he retired as a senior technical service representative.
Bill was also an active member of the Ohio/West Virginia Football Officials Association. He held various positions within the association that included past president, member of the executive committee, training class instructor (18 years), and eastern district representative. He was also a member and past co-chairman of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) football officials training committee.
Bill enjoyed a successful and rewarding 28-year career as a football official with 18 successive years of OHSAA playoff assignments, including three semi-final assignments and two state championship assignments. He also had the privilege of working the “Big 33” All-star game (Ohio vs. Pennsylvania) in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Bill was most proud of and grateful for his partnership and marriage to his wife Nancy of 50 years and the family they raised together. He also felt a sense of accomplishment as all three of their children obtained college degrees and have gone on to be good role models and positive members of society.
Bill is grateful and appreciative for the many friendships established throughout his life. He feels his friends have made him a better person.
As I look back on my life, “it has been a pretty good ride.”
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Erma (Criss) Linn, daughter Melanie Linn of Steubenville, Ohio, and brother-in-law John J. Borsch.
Bill is survived by his wife Nancy (Borsch) Linn, daughter Carrie (Matthew) Branchik of Chicago, son Eric (Liza) Linn of Pittsburgh, grandchildren Helen, Samuel, and John ‘Jack’ Branchik and Francesca and William ‘Will’ Linn, sister Paula (David) Krechowski of Beaver Falls, PA, and nieces Kelly, Tiffany, and Jackie and nephews John, Tony, and Craig.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 3 to 7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Fr. Matthew Gossett will celebrate. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
