William Michael (Mike) Tost, 79, of Steubenville, Ohio passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 8, 2026 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mike was born on July 10, 1946 in Steubenville, the first son of the late Peter and Janet Tost. Mike attended Steubenville Catholic Central for high school and then West Liberty University in West Virginia for college. While enrolled at West Liberty, Mike also volunteered to serve his country during the Vietnam War, entering the Air Force and serving as a medic in San Antonio, Texas. In the Air Force, Mike treated and cared for numerous members of the military throughout the war. Following his military service and college education, Mike returned to his hometown and began employment with Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, where he remained employed for 37 years as a Boiler Operator, before retiring in 2011.
Without question, Mike’s foremost passion in life was his family. Mike had three (3) younger brothers (David, John and Peter), all of whom preceded him in death. Mike also has a surviving younger sister, Catherine (Dale) Sadler, currently of Pensacola, Florida, with whom he shared a special familial bond over the years despite their physical distance. Mike is survived by the love of his life, Laura, whom he met at Steubenville Catholic Central while still in high school. Mike and Laura married in May 1969, and were married for 56 years prior to his death. Mike was a devoted father to his three surviving children (Christopher (Nicole) of Twinsburg, Oho, Janet Maxon (Casey) of Wintersville, Ohio and Annie Dohnal (David) of South Euclid, Ohio), for whom he selflessly devoted countless hours of time throughout their childhood and into adulthood. Mike was also a loving grandfather (Papa) to seven surviving grandchildren (Sophia, Blaine, Brady, Isabella, Gia, Jaxson and Benjamin), who became his true pride and joy in his final years.
Mike was known by those who knew him as an incredibly kind man of deep integrity. Some of Mike’s strongest attributes included his organizational skills and ability to “fix” just about anything. In his twilight years, Mike took great joy in spending time on his IPad, which he used to view pictures and videos of his family, enjoy his favorite television shows and youtube videos, read the news, color and watch live streamed videos of his grandchildren’s athletic events. Mike also had a passion for watching Pittsburgh sports, including both the Pirates and the Steelers. Mike will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and his legacy and spirit will live on in his family and friends and passed on to future generations.
Visitation will be held Sunday April 12, 2026 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.
